Book Review Bits – Old West Romance?

08 Oct

Maybe it’s been awhile since I read any Old West Romances, because both of the ones I reviewed recently had unexpected elements. So belly up to the Review Bit Bar for a double.

Wild Violet by Ariel C. Horn

This was a really different take on a romantic western. The tension between the main characters seemed sometimes juvenile to me, but it was enjoyable. The romp across the west, bad guys in pursuit, introduction of perspectives both Native American and African American gave this story part of the extra something it needed. Running from bad guys of the county into Bandidos as well, honorable thieves (some of them)–well, this book had a lot of diversity which I think is truer to the old west that was.

The Outlaw’s Kiss by Anya Karin

This was certainly a wild romp out the trail west to Deadwood with infamous characters, a hero who is friendly with the raiding natives, and gold in the hills, fortunes to be made and lost and claims changing hands. Definitely a fun read with romantic interludes that were sweet even though the dialogue was a little over the top for my taste. I recommend this to readers who like romance and action in a quick one-two punches.
