While sorting paperwork a couple weeks ago, I ran across a facsimile of one of George Washington’s prayers. I kept the copy from a tour last year of Washington’s church in Alexandria, Virginia where I sat in his family’s box. It reminded me of praying presidents and to pray for national leaders. What a perfect President’s Day post, I thought. I immediately knew what image to post with it.

My husband first introduced me to the painting of George Washington Praying at Valley Forge. This print by artist Arnold Friberg is quite popular amongst Christian military families. I’ve seen it on several walls in homes I’ve visited. What I didn’t know was how popular the theme of Washington praying has been in art until I Googled for images of Washington praying.

But the heart of this post is the President’s prayer, to which I say “Amen.”

George Washington’s Prayer For His Country

I now make it my earnest prayer,

that God would have the United States in His holy Protection,

that He would incline the Hearts of the Citizens

to cultivate a Spirit of Subordination and Obedience to Government,

to entertain a Brotherly Affection and Love for one another,

for their fellow Citizens of the United States at large,

and particularly for their Brethren who have served in the Fields,

and final, that He would most graciously be pleased to dispose us all-

to do Justice, to love Mercy and to demean ourselves

with that Charity, Humility, and Pacific Temper of Mind,

which were the Characteristics of the Divine Author of our blessed Religion,

and without an humble Imitation of whose Example in these things,

we canb never hope to be a happy Nation. Amen.

–George Washington
