Home Church (Soulful Sunday)

08 Nov

Screen Shot 2015-11-08 at 2.03.13 PMThe World’s schedule often undermines our attempts to go to church to worship with other believers. That function we’re going to for work is on a Saturday and lasts till midnight. The children’s sports schedules will have Sunday games times that force a choice.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m not advocating sleeping in on Sunday and calling that church or spending months and years away from churches because “they” have so many issues including all those hypocrites that go to them. I’ve learned the hard way that it’s for my benefit when God admonishes “not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near” (RSV Hebrews 10:25).

Church or our son’s soccer game. Recovery sleep or church. What should we do?

Our family doesn’t treat these choices as either/or. It’s a false dichotomy. What are our other choices?

Some of my most memorable times of worship were with family. Standing and sitting around my mother’s hospital bed. Sitting in a hotel conference room where we had our family reunion. Sitting on boulders under the trees with a handful of believers.

Daddy picked the sermon turning to the video options from the church we attended in North Carolina when we were newlyweds. Pastor Jeff is still whoopin’ it up at Aaron Lake with down home preaching. Ryan had already listened to the first in a four part series that used Samson to teach about the strengths and weaknesses of men. With four boys at home, Ryan wanted us all to do the series together. There’s a plan.

Want to do hymns? Here’s some oldies but goodies. Prefer a drum set laying down your rhythms? Okay…these are only modern rather than really rocking. OR–ask each family member for a favorite and produce your own Family Worship song list like this one. (If you know us and/or our sons you might take a moment and play the “guess who nominated that song” game.)

We topped off home church with prayer time where each person that wanted to prayed about what was on their mind. How precious are the prayers of children! All together our home church was great bonding in faith and family.

Now…about that day of rest we all need…
