Putting My $$$ Where My Literary Mouth Is

Screen Shot 2014-06-27 at 8.53.50 PMOn the heels of George R. R. Martin’s Wolf Sanctuary Fundraiser ‘Got $20,000? Then you too can die in a Game of Thrones Book’ my in house guest blogger launches a challenge that 1) every reader can afford and that 2) oddly enough benefits poor and underprivileged people. Check it out. –Kristin King

Write a Review – Save the World (Guest Post by Ryan King, Author of the Land of Tomorrow Trilogy)

Wait…what? Yes, fine respectable readers, it can be done. Let me explain the what first and then the how.

Several years ago my wife and I lived in Belgium where we met a wonderful young Congolese woman named Bintu. Her family had sent her to Belgium to obtain her degree and  get her away from the war going on near her home in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Bintu lived with us for a while and became obsessed with using her God-given skills and talents to try and help her country and its peoples. More specifically, she wanted to help women and young girls in eastern DRC who had been abused, abandoned, and generally disregarded in many cases. She seeks to help them and other students through education, kindness and general support. The fruits of her struggle and efforts is a non-profit organization called Future Hope Africa http://www.futurehopeafrica.com.

To date Future Hope Africa has helped and educated hundreds of young people by providing them a skill and convincing them of their genuine worth. My wife and I support this organization as much as we can. She is actually traveling to eastern DRC is a few months to assist Bintu in this endeavor.

So what does this have to do with book reviews? I’m glad you asked. I’m sure most people are familiar with a pledge system. People come door to door and ask you to pledge one dollar for every mile they run or car they wash or something of the like. Well, this is a reverse pledge system. I pledge to donate $10 of my own money for every Amazon review of one of my books or stories you write in the month of July. I will do this regardless of whether the review is in response to this blog, whether it be good or bad, or how long the review happens to be. At the end of the month I will post the results.

In order to help kick this off, I will even make four of my works free during the month of July and reviews of these free works certainly count.

2-6 July: The Protectors (Dystopian) – http://www.amazon.com/Protectors-Ryan-King-ebook/dp/B00HFGSMF2

9-13 July: Best Interests – http://www.amazon.com/Best-Interests-ebook/dp/B007X7WOPM

16-20 July: Better Off Dead – http://www.amazon.com/Better-Off-Dead-ebook/dp/B00DQ0ZS62

23-27 July: Mask of Mitwaba (Paranormal) – http://www.amazon.com/Mask-of-Mitwaba-ebook/dp/B00C3RZQ0W

Here are links to some of my others works if you wish to write a review of one of them.

Glimmer of Hope (Post Apocalyptic) – http://www.amazon.com/Glimmer-Hope-Ryan-King/dp/147931207X

Children of Wrath – http://www.amazon.com/Children-Wrath-Land-Tomorrow-ebook/dp/B00GAXHPDG/

Dead World Voices: Post Apocalyptic Boxed Set – http://www.amazon.com/Dead-World-Voices-Apocalyptic-Boxed-ebook/dp/B00KK1GYLI

The Hanging of Hard Barnes (Historical Fiction – LA Noir) –

The Last Man – http://www.amazon.com/The-Last-Man-Ryan-King/dp/1479235490

No Kinda Life – http://www.amazon.com/No-Kinda-Life-Ryan-King/dp/1479235067

Kentucky Feud – http://www.amazon.com/Kentucky-Feud-ebook/dp/B00BKQMX44

The Darkside of Down Home – http://www.amazon.com/The-Darkside-Down-Home-Secret/dp/1479319694

The Other Side of Down Home – http://www.amazon.com/Other-Side-Down-Home-Storytelling-ebook/dp/B00FG3GJGU

Is this proposal on my part completely selfless? Of course not, I want more reviews of my books. But I also want to draw attention to this wonderful organization that is trying to help people and in some small way make our world better. In short, I’m putting my money where my literary mouth is.

Will you help me?

–Ryan King

Kindle Book On Sale for 99 cents–Click photo.

This week is the anniversary of the sinking of Titanic, and since my first ever published work was set on that ship I thought it was time to host a giveaway. Audiobooks, audiobooks, audiobooks. You can enter to win one of three Unsinkable Vampire copies, or one of my husband’s audiobooks: No Kinda Life (post-apocalyptic western), The Hanging of Hard Barnes (L.A. Noir historical fiction), or The Last Man (post-apocalyptic journey). Unfortunately, WordPress.com doesn’t allow the widget for the giveaway, so you’ll have to visit this link.

Why stop with one Giveaway? I thought.

If you like to browse books and possibly win one, visit the “Explore” tab at Goodreads. There is always a long list of books organized by Ending Soon, Most Requested (if you like bad odds), Popular Authors (like David Baldacci, Terry Brooks, and Mary Higgins Clark), and Recently Listed. Browse Goodreads Giveaways here.

Or you could go for the sure thing.

As a publisher, I give away a weekly freebie (short read) that I list here and Tweet here. A dystopian tale called The Protectors by Ryan King is free till Easter,

From the cover of The Protectors, Dystopian book FREE till Easter. Click here to download.

From the cover of The Protectors, Dystopian book FREE till Easter. Click here to download.

Charles R. King’s military history Discipline and Decline: Collected Essays on Ancient Rome is free till Sunday as well.

Then there are always the Freebies you can access via the Top 100 Bestsellers (Free) on Amazon, or you can do a quick search on Twitter for #FreeBooks.

This way the odds really are “ever in your favor.”

Tis the Season Reading: Poem 4 Gifts

Christmas in the post-War United States

Christmas in the post-War United States (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Holidays are meant to be special, and one thing I like about my Maryland Writers Association critique group is that I get to see what folks creative with words do for these special events. For instance, our group once edited a contract with the devil for a soul.  That writer was going to a party as Satan and carrying a quite detailed, LOL funny, and a touch scary contract. Yikes!

As our December meeting, one participant brought us each a Christmas Tree cookie from Panera’s (yum!) to which she attached a poem about the season. Her name is Brenda Elmore, a poet, humorist, and essayist whose work you might catch in Baltimore/Annapolis area publications. She graciously allowed me to share the poem with you (i.e. used by permission).

Christmas © Copyright 2013 by Brenda Elmore.

It’s always the same thing, every single d***ed year;

I think Christmas is far off, then it’s suddenly here!

And nothing is done, not the shopping, the baking,

the cards, nor the wrappings, the cleaning! It’s taking

me all by surprise though I knew it was coming,

an I’m panicked and stressed, yet I find myself humming.

It’s the carols, the music that soothes as it chimes

through my heart, through my mind–

How I love Christmas time!

Special thanks to Brenda and to all my writers group pals. You guys keep me going and improving in terms of writing, editing, and reading for skill all year round. I hope my input is of benefit to you as well.

Tis the Season Reading: Indie Children’s Book

Yahoo photo smallerI “met” Barbara Ann Derksen through social media and have been impressed again and again with how professional and friendly an independent author she is. So when I discovered her Christmas children’s book, I had to reach out to see if she would like to participate in my blog series.

Of course she wanted to participate, AND she’s contributing a free copy for my Tis the Season Reading Giveaway launching this weekend. She is definitely one author hoping to hear from you; just check out her links to connect.

So without further ado, I present “Scruffles Finds a Home”. Here’s the gist:

Scruffles, a tiny field mouse, seeks warmth from the winter chills inside a large, red brick building. Once inside she encounters a number of characters whom she discovers are inanimate but … she also is chased by a large man in a red suit. What does he want with her? She scurries hither and yon but eventually he catches up. Find out what happens next in Scruffles Finds a Home.
What might motivate an author like Ms. Derksen? Check out her bio:
Watching the expressions on the faces of her readers is what drives author and speaker, Barbara Ann Derksen to write. Her favorite genre is murder mystery but each book brings forth characters who rely on God as they solve the puzzle in their life.

With 17 books to her credit, Barbara works hard to develop a social media presence. Her books can be found on Amazon at http://amzn.to/MPPTst, at Barnes and Nobles, and on her website, http://www.barbaraannderksen.com.

Canadian born, Barbara is a member of The Writer’s Collective, and Christian Motorcyclists Association, USA.

I expect a little mystery for Scruffles as well, but you’ll have to find that out from the book. My thanks to Barbara and everyone joining in the Tis the Season Reading Series. —Kristin

Tis the Season Reading: Unexpected Christmas Myth FREE

Free on Amazon

Free on Amazon

Well done, paranormal author Sadie Hart.

Silver Bells is a fantasy that pulls from holiday myth to create a completely new (at least to me) mystical world inside of ours. I didn’t see it coming and don’t want to ruin it for you. It’s a quick 24 page short story that appears to be on permanent FREE status for Kindle.

I recommend this to readers who don’t mind being kept in the dark so the story threads can come together in an unexpected ending.

While this story is an innocent tale, the excerpt attached to the end hints at hotter offings as the Hart norm (also see SadieHart.com). Ms. Hart’s bio at the end of this Christmas story says:

At night, she writes steamy, paranormal romances revolving around the things that go bump in the night – both the spooky and the naughty kind. She lives in Michigan with two large dogs and a flying pig, who’s possibly a superhero and possibly a figment of her imagination.

Regardless of your preferred genre, I think you’ll find Silver Bells a holiday delight.

Tis the Season Reading: Romance on the Rise

Free on Amazon for Limited Time

Free on Amazon for Limited Time

If a search of my satellite tv options is to be believed, romance movies are more popular than family films for Christmas. And they aren’t all too high on cheese factor. What about books? Although not as heavily weighted, holiday romances make up a good portion of Amazon’s Top 100 Free titles right now.  So I wanted to feature one of those titles today, so you can get it while it’s hot.

Description:

Christmas represents everything Andi Williams is supposed to have, and doesn’t. Running away to a remote mountain lodge in the Canadian Rockies, sounds like the perfect way to escape, until a mix-up finds her sharing a villa with sexy, rough around the edges, Colin Hartford.

Colin’s determination to enjoy the holiday he’s missed for the last five years, sweeps Andi into a season of joy that she’s not sure she’s ready for. Can Andi open herself up to everything the holidays have to offer…including love?

The Overall rating of Unexpected Gifts is 4.5 STARS. Here are a few highlights from the reviews:

“I have become OBSESSED with Christmas early this year and this book was exactly what I wanted… a short, holiday read that put me even more in a festive mood.”

“This story is a delicious confection from start to finish, with a delightful pair of protagonists, and a wonderfully quirky cast of secondary characters. Add in one of the most spectacularly gorgeous settings – The Canadian Rockies in snowy winter – and the stage is set for a little bit of fairytale romance.”

“I would recommend this book to anyone who likes romance with intrigue This was very light reading and I enjoyed it immensely”

So grab Unexpected Gifts by Elena Aitken while it’s free.
