Soulful Sunday – I Want More

"The Dolphin Song" by Olivia Newton-John is an oft forgotten track from "Physical" but inspired me at a young age.

“The Promise” (aka Dolphin Song) by Olivia Newton-John is an oft forgotten track from “Physical” that inspired me at a young age.

I want more than this world has to offer..

Do you ever get a line from a song stuck in your head? The “shuffle” function in your mind no longer works and the same phrase keeps repeating–like a stuck record (for those of us that remember them) where the needle jumps back to the same circuit over, and over, and over. I’ve had that going for 2 weeks now.

I want more than this world’s got to offer..

I want more than this world’s got to offer..

I want more than this world’s got to offer..

Then yesterday a favorite song came on in the car and this line struck the same chord as I drove through streets lined with shops, beautiful Dutch houses, and even my children in the backseat.

And all I see
It could never make me happy

In Christian culture we often hear about being satisfied in God. Resting in Him rather than striving. We’ve somehow turned contentment into a virtue. I feel like ripping off my robe, throwing dust in my hair and mourning like a prophet from the Old Testament when I hear these sentiments misapplied. How ’bout some Holy Discontent? That’s what Pastor Drew calls it.

Personally, I want more than this world’s got to offer. Everything I see around me is corrupt in some way. It could never make me happy (i.e. unbounded, unending joy). I want more love, more power, more Jesus in my life. I want to trade in cobblestones for streets of gold. I want to hug my friends and family and with the confidence that it will never be the last because we are brothers and sisters in Christ. I want to play with baby Koala bears and swim with herds of dolphins for days and days on the New Earth that God promised us is coming.

My God is infinite! I can strive to know more and more and more of him for ETERNITY and still not appreciate all His Love, His Beauty, His Glory, His Grace.

I want more.
